7 reasons to love Milton Keynes

This year Milton Keynes celebrated its 50th birthday; it became an official new town in 1967. It’s also the location of one of our home improvement showrooms. Here are our top seven reasons to love Milton Keynes.

You won’t get lost

As the town was only designed in the 1960s, the roads were designed in a grid system that is unique in the UK. All the horizontal roads are called “….Way” and the vertical roads are “….Street”. This makes it an extremely easy place to get around, so hopefully you should never get lost. Milton Keynes is also known as the town of roundabouts with over 130 of them.

It’s an extremely green town

As a relatively new town, the layout has been planned meticulously. With over 22 million trees planted, you’ll feel like you’re in the country rather than a busy town. No-one is ever more than half a mile away from a park which makes it an attractive place to live and work.

It has the perfect location

The location of Milton Keynes was chosen as it’s equidistant between London, Birmingham, Leicester, Oxford and Cambridge. This makes it a perfect commuter town as well as a great base for exploring most of central England.

WW2 was won here

Milton Keynes is home to Bletchley Park where Alan Turing and his team cracked the German Enigma code. This is believed to have shortened the war by at least two years. The world’s first programmable digital electronic computer Colossus was used for the decryptions and can be seen in the museum.

It’s Britain’s’ fastest growing town

In 2013, Milton Keynes had over 255,000 residents and this is expected to rise to over 325,000 by 2037. This makes it’s Britain’s’ fastest growing city. Although technically still a town, citizens refer to it as a city and application for city status is ongoing.

It has a world-famous amphitheatre

This unique former clay-pit has been transformed into a renowned outdoor amphitheatre. It has hosted Michael Jackson, Queen and Metallica among others. With a capacity of 65,000, the Milton Keynes National Bowl is one of the biggest venues in the country.
