What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
Let’s look at what both of these are first. A conservatory is classified as a glazed extension where at least 50% of the building and 75% of the roof are glazed. Though with new styles this definition is more flexible now. An orangery is more of a hybrid of an extension and a conservatory. With a brick base and solid pillars, they give you a comfortable room that feels like a natural part of your home. Orangeries are often seen as the more luxurious of the two. However, both a conservatory and orangery can be customised to look exactly the way you want them to.
Glazing
Are orangeries warmer than conservatories? Due to the amount of solid materials an orangery has, the traditional view is that orangeries are warmer. However, with efficient uPVC frames and solar control glass, conservatories can be just as warm. Long gone are the days of abandoning your conservatory in the depths of winter. Orangeries traditionally have solid or lantern roofs which gives them more traditional insulation. However, did you know you can also have a solid roof conservatory or a conservatory roof replacement? Your conservatory can have a solar control glass roof or a tiled solid roof that blends in with your home. Lantern roofs are an attractive feature of many orangeries; these consist of elevated glazed panels on a flat roof. This gives you the best of both worlds; a perimeter ceiling with beautiful glazing in the middle. This fills your room with light while still giving you some privacy.
Materials
